The education market is the second largest industry just behind the healthcare industry. In the past, it was insignificant to see the application of technology in the education sector. However, in recent years, increasing awareness of education technology leads to surges in EdTech investment. In 2020, Global EdTech Venture Capital attained $16.1 billion which has grown 32x since 2010.


With improving education technologies, teachers and students may find it hard to follow and adapt. In this article, we are going to summarize 4 types of main trends in education technology to facilitate your understanding of the future development of EdTech.

1 eLearning

Due to the Covid-19 situation, lots of the schools have turned to online teaching mode since 2020. Students are familiar with different online learning platforms. eLearning allows teachers to reach many students at the same time at a much lower cost than traditional classes (face-to-face classes). However, even before the pandemic, online courses are also prevalent and provide alternative learning sources for students in different age groups and professionals to improve their skills. We believe that eLearning will keep growing and further develop in the post-pandemic period.

With the rapid growth in A.I. technology, people tend to pursue personalized education. Through analyzing individual academic results and performance in different topics, the system can generate corresponding practices and learning pathways for students. Personalized education gives students a clear picture of what they did well and what they misunderstood. It helps improve students’ performance and confidence, which further cultivates more all-rounded talents to contribute to our society. Due to its immature nature, it provides lots of room for start-ups to operate related businesses and attract investors to pay attention to its future.

3 Gamification of Learning

From our childhood, we are encouraged to read more books and explore some new knowledge. However, children are always full of energy, creative, and pursuing a breath of fresh air. In the digital era, learning through games can attract students and inspire their creativity. Minecraft, as a well-known sandbox world, offers gamers to build whatever they want and cooperate to adventure. Integrating game elements into learning can enhance students’ sense of participation, encourage them to discover some areas they are interested in, and motivate them to learn.

4 Tech-Enabled Immersive Learning

AR and VR are one of the main trends in technology development. It can greatly affect the education sector. Compared to traditional classes, AR and VR can provide students with an immersive learning environment to learn efficiently. Schools may use much lower costs to express the same concept, such as scientific ideas via virtual experiments. Students with disabilities can gain the same experience which they may not be able to physically access. Immersive learning with technology greatly extends students’ learning experience with relatively lower costs, which can be a new force in EdTech.
